A coral reef crochet!?!

holidays, sun, sea and .... if I told you that there is a coral reef entirely realizzzata crochet?

The idea came from Margaret and Christine Wertheim, two Australian sisters who have seen a multitude of meanings in the project: scientific, environmental, social and artistic. In fact, all the pieces of coral reefs are made from waste plastic crochet covered by the work of many women around the world who have offered their creativity and craftsmanship combined with enthusiasm for the initiative. They are part of the exhibition also "bleached reef, a reef that has lost all its charm pigments because of pollution and the" toxic reef "all made with plastic waste. Moreover, the models for the realization of the pieces are the result of studies on the hyperbolic geometry. It seems that the only way so far experienced in the representation of these geometric figures is only possible through the use of wool and crochet. The exhibition

Hyperbolic CROCHET CORAL REEF: A Woolly Wonder was hosted by the Science Gallery in Dublin from 20 March to 11 March 2010 and now you can visit the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York until January 9, 2011.

If you want to build your reef you can find the patterns in the book "Making Mathematics with Needlework: Ten Papers and Ten Projects .
